    To whom it may concern,

There is an extremely rare TA-N1 amp for sale on ebay. Item #110454443775. Also from the same seller a pair of extremely rare SS-M9EDs for sale. Item #110454753704. The seller says the amp is in good shape but the speakers are beat up. The super tweeters are crushed. He said these items were donated to a school and have been sitting around there for some years. Lucky school to have been given these very rare (and most expensive) members of Sony's reference SACD system. Too bad they didn't know what they had or least didn't appreciate them._Mykl

Mykyll- Very nice find!! I can understand why they didn't appreciate the TA N1 at the school though in that after hearing the SCD-1, TA E-1, TA N-1 and SS M9ED set up in its own dedicated custom designed and acoustically tuned listening room for over a year the owner of the Sony Only Store decided to put a TV projector setup in the room instead and the TA N-1 was relegated to running the Stereo speaker pairs in the overcrowded speaker demonstration room along with a seriously compromised Digital front end and Preamp and its sound quality went from spectacular to mundane.

This Sony Statement piece truly belongs in an Audio System like yours where the quality of the associated equipment is high and the Operator's knowledge of setup and acoustics has been applied to all facets and phases of Audio reproduction allowing the sublime sound quality of the TA N-1 to be fully revealed.

Not too bad for someone who wants to own a $9,000 Flagship Sony Power Amp for pennies on the dollar and avoid having to pay the $1,000's and $1,000's that it would cost for a very rare minty TA N-1!

For a collector, the condition of the SS-M9s is not the most major concern, though new tweeters/woofers to replace the damaged ones are very pricey.  The shipping would be a bigger worry.  If those speakers are over 120lbs each, it would be impossible to predict the condition of their arrival, even with superior packaging.  In the past, Agora members have reported receiving damaged K90s in the mail due to poor handling, and the K90s are only about 50lbs.  I would highly recommend insuring them for the maximum value at MSRP prior to shipping.  It's a big risk buying that set, but for a DIY project, that's a treasure of a find.

Never seen a pair available in the UK before, the price is way too much for me though.

And another pair I've never seen on ebay before.

Were you the one that made a cheeky offer, then?
I'm watching those out of interest, and great curiosity.
Did everyone read the Stereophile review of those things - amazing FR!
Anyone got an idea of what they're really worth?
I've seen some amazing bargains in high-end stuff go through recently.
    (Top Revel & B&O for £2-3000).

No i've not made any offer at all. I'm sticking with my modded NS-1000M's for a long time yet. Though I would dearly love to have those SS-M9ED's, I remember reading the inductors in them were wound in some unusual fashion, all very interesting. I love little quirks like that. I've no idea of their real worth, they are so rare and so often frowned upon because they have Sony written on them.

Does anyone have the technical reports for any of the TA-E1/N1/SCD-1/SS-M9ED range?

"Perfect Lay, Hexagonal Winding, Litz Wire Inductor" -  litz wire inductors! I bet they weren't cheap to make.

edit : Seems they didn't make them, all capacitors and inductors used in the SS-M9ED were made by Solen.

I think the big thing with crossover components is to avoid electrolytic capacitors and ferrite-cored inductors.  Film caps and air-cored inductors are much more expensive, but thats what the very best speakers seem to be doing these days.

You know, (he says, getting his REALLY ivory-towered philosophical hat on for a minute) I'm starting to think that audio systems are ultimately limited not by schematics, but by the amount of bad dielectric that the audio signal comes into contact with.  Dielectrics for electric fields, and ferrites and the like for magnetic fields.

What I mean by that are ALL dielectrics that support dynamic fields:

    PCBs
    cables
    capacitors
    connectors
    crossovers
    anything that's not air

So .... the shortest signal path and the thinnest insulators lowest de-electric constants are best.

I think hexagonal lay means the wires take a hexagonal-honeycomb type pattern when considered as a cross-section of the winding - minimal air gaps.  Like hexagon close-packing in physical chemistry.

Hah!  The auction just ended with four offers ranging from £500 to 850.  Not what the seller had in mind, I think.  I would have offered more than that!  And I thought he was getting a n lot of interest.
