Would like some input on what Sony proposed to me:

I have a kdl-46xbr5 which just went belly up (13 flashes on standby light) diagnosed as a dead lcd panel.  Out of warranty by 4 months and they offered me a kdl-46w5100 for 250 or a kdl-52xbr9 for 400. I was contemplating taking the 52 xbr9 as it would seem to be a nice upgrade but should I push for a xbr8 model instead b/c it has led backlight instead of the xbr9 which has a ccfl backlight.  They have been genuinely receptive except for the "lost in translation" part of dealing with reps in which english is not their native language. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I suspect that there is no way that they are going to offer an XBR8 as a replacement, but what the heck!  Give it a try!  I purchased my KDL55XBR8 for precisely the reason that you mentioned, LED back lighting!  Now it appears that Sony has gone back to the drawing board regarding LED back lit models, probably due to the huge success of LED back lit Samsung models.

Talked to Sony, took the kdl52xbr9 for 400. Tried to get expedited shipping and extended warranty, but they wouldn't go for it and xbr8 request was as if I was speaking vulcan(it's as if they are reading from a script and won't deviate unless you try to go to the next level i.e. writing a letter to corporate exec office or file a lawsuit like some have done) I just don't have it in me to fuss over $400 for a NEW 52"xbr9 from a 46"xbr5, don't get me wrong, but one thing I've learned is to pick your battles, they could have said "too bad so sad" you're out of warranty, NO SOUP FOR YOU! Plus, I read the "bravia 13 blinks" thread and that guy had the same initial problem that I had but he tinkered with his tv and was able to fix it for $20 with a new tube/bulb instead of taking the diagnosis of 13 blinks that his LCD panel was DOA, so before I send my old set off to be recycled I think I'll try to dissect it."nothing ventured, nothing gained"

p.s. thanks for the advice jehill
