    Hello All,

As some of you know it has been a couple of months since I got my new TV/RCVR and they have been working great. Today when I came home I got two nice surprises:

    1. When I turned on the TV I got a message saying there was new FW (I have the TV connected to my home network via LAN). The TV dled it and applied it.

    2. I checked for updates on my RCVR (again connected via LAN) and it found a new FW version dled it and applied it... No messy serial cables, no taking it to the service center or worse yet shipping it off to TX!

Now this is how things should be done! Nice easy and automatic...

For the curious I have no idea what the RCVR update does - other than it now allows my HTPC to handshake successfully w/ HDMI direct off (but only if I first go to my blu-ray player and then back to the HTPC). Still better then having to have HDMI direct on as this caused problems for the BDP-S5000ES and did not allow the receiver to put info on the monitor/TV

On the TV front the update supposedly removes delays in switching digital channels...

Interesting!  I'll have to download the KDL55XBR8 update.

    jehill,

How did your update go? Did you use a LAN or USB update? Any changes that you have noticed? TIA!

I haven't done the download yet.  Only yesterday did I connect an Ethernet cable to the TV.  I am more interested on what I can "see" on my  home network

I tried the "Software Update" last night and received the following message:

The current software version is PKG412R
    No update available

Today I tried the Network/Server Diagnostics while my Vista PC was up and running and received the following message:

    Network/Server Diagnostics - Results

Intel Media Server (OUR PC)      Successful 0     Unsuccessful 1

I need to learn more about the Intel Media Server that I didn't even know was on my PC.

    Jehill,

I believe this refers to vista's ability to share media. If you have chosen to share media (music, avi, etc..) then your PC will act as a server. Weird you were unable to get the FW update. I had PKG412R and was updated to PKG415R.

If you want to get it from Sony.

I have studied up, configured and attempted to use the "Intel Viiv Media Server" on my Windows Vista Ultimate PC.  Still no go!  Today at work a coworker mentioned that there is a "Plug-In" that you can get from Microsoft to make it work, but so far I haven't been able to locate it.

Finally, I am able to view all of the .jpeg files on my PC via the Ethernet connection.  Although the "Intel Viiv Media Server" software appears what you need to use, it is not.  All that is required is configuration of the Windows Media Player (WMP) "Library,  Media Sharing" and "Library, Add to Library" options for each user.  Here is the link that I found that tells you how:

SLB: Vista: Setup DLNA Media Server for PS3 - Step-by-Step Guide

When you select the camera in the XMB, a Windows Media Player 11 icon appears.  When you select it, the server name appears, in our case its "OUR PC: Admin:".  You then have options for how to find pictures.  The same server name appears under Network/Setup Show Hide Servers option.  Actually, I have three servers listed, one for each PC log-on, Admin, John and Barbara.  However, the content is identical on all three, so I have John and Barbara (OUR PC: John:, OUR PC: Barbara hidden.  You need to setup WMP 11 for all users in order for all pictures to be available.

Now that I have networking fully configured, it finally dawned on me that you can only view .jpeg files via the Ethernet connection on the KDL-55XBR8.  What a bummer!  It looks like the "Video Link Module DMX-NV1" MAY allow you to view video files on your PC.  One would hope that would include the .m2ts files created by a Sony HD Handycam such as the HSR-SR12 that I have.  I am not about to purchase the DMX-NV1 unless that's a fact!

The only way that you can listen to music is via the USB port or via a Digital Media Port (DMPORT).  You can also view videos that way.  I need to look into that option more.

According to p-56 of the STR-DA6400ES Operating Instructions, you can play music and video as well as view pictures off the network.  These are all available via the Windows Media Player server, once you configure it.  Have you tried it yet?

    jehill,

to be honest I have not. I have a custom builty HTPC connected to my HT so all the heavy lifting for the computer based A/V content is done by the HTPC. But it should be straight forward enough to configure I would think. In WMP there is an option to shre music/video. Once that is on the system should act as a server. Have you tried that yet?

Yes, I have already setup WNP 11 to make my PC a DNLA certified media server.

What are you using for a HTPC?  I imagine you have an HDMI connection from it to your TV, right?  That way, you can view/play whatever your PC can play.  I have to live with the players included in my TV that are connected to the Ethernet port, which is only one, to view .jpeg files.  Music playback doesn't have access to the network connection.  It can only play .mp3 files via the USB connection.  Perhaps that will change in a future firmware upgrade!  I don't have an STR-DA6400ES, so I can't explore its capabilities.

    jehill,

I am using a custom built solution with Vista Media Center. If you'd like I will give you a break down of components. However, just about any late model PC should do...
