I have a SL HF 400 that will output perfect video but but only for a few seconds. I put a tape in it and it starts to play but then in a few seconds, the unit powers down. I bought it new many years ago and have used it very little. Now when I want to transfer my beta tapes to DVD, it won't continue playing long enough to do anything. There are no repair shops in my area who repair beta vcrs and no one knows anything about them where I live.
Is there some kind of shut down circuit involved that is causing this problem and does anyone have any suggestions as to what it may be that causes it to power down shortly after startiing to play? Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome to Agoraquest! Perhaps there are electrolytic capacitors that need to be replaced. They are the only component that I can think of that just dies. I would start checking the largest first, as they usually the power supply filter capactors. Of course, I could be way out here. Another possibility might be a limit switch or position sensor that needs adjustment.

Another possibility could be dirt on the photosensors on the reel table assembly inside the VCR.
Getting to the reel table, however, is labor intensive work.
Other possibilities could be electric; as Jehill has said, there is a good chance that there are some electrolytic capacitors that are dried up or leaky in the servo control and the system control circuits.
This assumes that the transport is moving the tape exactly the way it should in the first place; the capstan is able to pull the tape from the supply reel and the reel table is able to take the tape up with the take-up reel, and both reels are moving smooth and steadily and with the tape having correct backtensioning.

If power down you mean unloading the tape but not ejection from the transport then powering off with a display still showing something or a power standby light(if so equipped)those are ussually the result of a condesation sensor. if the tape is ejected as well then problems could be with the tape itself, transport sensors or control track issues. If it suts down with the tape still loaded in the transport then power problems coud be to blame.
