Sony Video: California Decision Could Limit HDTV Choices Nationwide
Posted by claudio on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 @ 13:35:33 EST (175 reads)
Sony Television Bravia LCD On Nov. 18 the California Energy Commission is scheduled to vote on a proposal that would require retailers by 2011 to limit sales of TV sets to those that consume about a third less power than they do today.

Since the public hearing on Oct. 3, industry groups have turned up the volume in opposition to the new guidelines. If passed, the best value in home theater HDTVs will disappear from California shelves and, some analysts figure, will ultimately cut consumer choices across the country.

Sony Video: CEDIA 2009: Sonys First Wireless Blu-ray Player
Posted by claudio on Sunday, September 13, 2009 @ 17:39:47 EDT (812 reads)
Sony Blu-Ray Player Tacitly acknowledging that many consumers don't have an Ethernet connection anywhere near their TV, Sony introduced on Tuesday its first Blu-ray player that can connect to the Ethernet wirelessly.

Additionally, the company announced two new TVs that also can connect to the Internet without a cable.

But the feature comes with a price: about $80. That's what you'll pay at Amazon for the awkwardly named Linksys by Cisco Wireless-N Ethernet Bridge that Sony recommends you use to get the broadband signal into the Blu-ray player and the TVs. (The Bridge, once plugged in to the units, picks up a signal from your home’s wireless router. Other brands of wireless bridges can also be used.)

Posted by claudio on Sunday, July 26, 2009 @ 13:56:41 EDT (862 reads)
Sony Blu-Ray Player Sony's Blu-ray megachangers may be the big news today, but the company also announced a single-disc high-end Blu-ray player, the BDP-S1000ES ($700, August release date).

It's the least expensive Blu-ray player in the Sony ES ("Elevated Standard") line and comes with a few premium features like integrated 802.11N Wi-Fi, better build quality, and 7.1 analog outputs, along with now-standard features like Profile 2.0 compatibility and onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Like the step-down Sony BDP-S560, the BDP-S1000ES is DLNA-compliant and is capable of streaming photos off a connected DLNA-friendly device.

Sony Video: OLED To Replace Plasma and LCD TV Before 2012?
Posted by claudio on Monday, June 01, 2009 @ 16:59:32 EDT (1157 reads)
Sony Oled A brand new technology, OLED, could replace both Plasma and LCD technologies in our lounge at a faster rate than the two dislodged the venerable Cathode Ray Tube (CRT).

The price of Organic Light Emitting Diode technology is expected to fall down over the next few years reaching a more mainstream audience just before the Olympic Games in London in 2012.

Until then, the only screen currently available boosting this technology is Sony's super slim Bravia XEL-1 which costs a staggering £3489 with a 3mm thickness.

It comes with a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 and is built using eco-friendly bio plastic material. Still you could save a lot by flying to the US and purchase one over there where it is sold for around $2499.

Sony Video: Sony to finally unveil larger-screen OLED TVs at IFA?
Posted by claudio on Monday, April 27, 2009 @ 12:14:02 EDT (1779 reads)
Sony Oled [Engadget] We've been waiting for what seems like ages for the next iteration of the XEL-1 to dash in and swoop us off of our feet, but frankly, we're growing anxious. As the world waits for a commercial-ready OLED TV that's larger than a standard sheet of paper, industry insiders down at the IFA briefings in Malta this past week believe that Sony could be gearing up to make all sorts of hopes and dreams come true this September.

Jens Heithecker, executive director of Messe Berlin, which organizes the IFA trade fair, noted that "IFA is a trade show which is focused more on market-ready technologies," hinting that anything we see in just a few short months will be prepared for release into the wild. We're also told that more "ultra-widescreen" 21:9 sets -- like Philips' masterpiece -- could be on display, not to mention scores of internet-ready HDTVs and a Samsung set with refresh rates of 400Hz.

Needless to say, IFA's shaping up to be quite a show for the television sector, so you may want to think twice (or thrice, if necessary) about snagging a new panel on August 31st.

IFA is on the 4th of September.

Sony Video: Blu-ray now a Samsung loss leader, but is Sony set to benefit?
Posted by claudio on Friday, October 24, 2008 @ 22:20:13 EDT (2735 reads)
Sony Blu-Ray Player Samsung has today reinforced the notion that Blu-ray players are a loss leader, rather than a viable product offering, by launching a promotion to give the struggling media device away with purchases of LCDs and plasmas.

In a promotion running until Christmas Eve, customers who purchase a Samsung series 5, 6 or 7 plasma, or a series 6, 7, 8 or 9 LCD, will receive the BD-P1500 Blu-ray player, which is RRP $499. This may prove a boon for retailers, who will be looking to maintain panel sales up to Christmas now that the Olympics rush is a distant memory.
