Sony Television: California Approves TV Efficiency Rules
Posted by claudio on Thursday, November 19, 2009 @ 01:25:32 EST (114 reads)
Sony News California regulators on Wednesday approved the nation’s first energy efficiency standards for televisions, requiring their electricity consumption to be cut nearly in half by 2013.

“This is a consumer protection measure, a measure that will protect the environment and which will save us from building a massive new power plant,” said Karen Douglas, chairwoman of the California Energy Commission, at a meeting in Sacramento.

The five energy commissioners voted unanimously to require television manufacturers to produce new models that use 33 percent less electricity by 2011 and 49 percent less electricity by 2013.

In recent years, televisions have become one of the home’s biggest energy hogs as ever-larger flat-screen models have proliferated.

Sony Television: Sony May Not Meet LCD TV Sales Target, President Says
Posted by claudio on Wednesday, January 07, 2009 @ 13:39:32 EST (1297 reads)
Sony Television Bravia LCD Sony Corp., the world’s second-largest consumer electronics maker, may miss its target for liquid- crystal-display television sales on lower-than-expected revenue in North America and Europe, the company’s president said.

The company’s 16 million units target for the 12 months ending March is “tough to reach,” President Ryoji Chubachi said in an interview with Bloomberg Television today. “We characterize the environment for our year-end sales as severe.”

Confidence among U.S. consumers unexpectedly dropped in December to a record on growing anxiety over the lack of jobs and U.K. consumer confidence fell to the lowest since at least 2004. Tokyo-based Sony said last month a “much” larger-than-anticipated deterioration in the economy spurred it to cut thousands of jobs, curb investments and might cause it to revise its profit targets.

Sony Television: Press Release: HTSA Warns Holiday Shoppers About Buying Low-End HDTVs
Posted by claudio on Thursday, December 11, 2008 @ 14:02:23 EST (1499 reads)
Industry News The buying group says holiday shoppers may regret buying a lower-end HDTV.

When high demand for HDTVs meets tightened consumer spending, the result is huge sales figures for cheap brands of flat panel televisions. But holiday shoppers should be cautious when considering purchasing a low-end HDTV to save a few hundred dollars this season says, David Berman, director of training and public relations for the Home Theater Specialists of America.

According to Berman, the primary methods low-end manufacturers use to cut manufacturing costs are to remove key technologies and features that reduce performance, reliability, and service. They install lower quality processing engines, pair them with displays that can't handle a full HD signal, and offer a warranty that makes it nearly impossible to repair the TV or have it replaced, even at a reasonable cost.
