    Industry News: The Most Significant Thing At E3 2009

    Well, another E3 behind us, and not just any E3. This was E3 born again. Following on the heels of the Supernova E3 and Dwarf Star E3, this was, I guess, the Phoenix E3?

    As this E3 fades, we’re left with the deluge of announcements and demos to digest. It’s an interesting thought exercise to consider which are the more significant ones. Which might have the biggest long term impact, might tip the scales in the console wars, open the market to new audiences and revenue streams, etc.

    There were lots of game announcements, lots of them exciting, but none so *different* as to warrant the label of ‘game changer’.

    There were no wild-card disruptive entrants like we saw at GDC with OnLive’s announcement.

    There were of course the keynotes from Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony.

    Sony’s got a new handheld to continue to duke it out with Nintendo on that front, and Nintendo continues to add titles and some new capabilities to their handheld. Nothing really groundbreaking on that front.

    Judging from the press, most people believe that the biggest news out of E3 is that MS and Sony have played their cards on the motion control front. Microsoft with some 3D camera tech to compete with Nintendo’s Wiimote, and Sony has a wand that kind of straddles both the camera and wand camps. That is big news to be sure, but not terribly surprising.

    The biggest question on the motion controller front will be what it means for developers and publishers. Big budget productions necessitate cross-platform development, or at least favor it. Certainly between PS3 and Xbox360 (and PC) we see a lot of cross-platform publishing. It will be interesting to see how and if titles can map to the very different motion controls between those platforms and Nintendo’s, and whether any of them get short-changed as a result of a lowest common denominator approach.
    But I don’t think that’s the most significant of the E3 announcements. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that the most significant item out of E3 was this:

    Sony PS 3: Sony: Third-Parties Already Receiving Motion Sensing Kits

    Sony Playstation 3 Those of you who were blown away by Sony's awesome motion tech presentation at their E3 press conference only had one question afterward: "when?!"

    Well, it depends, but there has been a lot of suspicion surrounding its competition, Microsoft's Project Natal. Some have claimed their presentation was "fake," in that Natal isn't exactly ready to go. On the flip side, according to Eurogamer, the development kits for Sony's motion sensing wands have already been distributed to designers. In a statement to GamSpot, Sony marketing guru Peter Dille had this to say on the subject:

    "We're a little bit past the research phase.We're having conversations with the third-party community. The dev kits have started to go out to the third parties as well. They're working on the tech. They couldn't be more excited about it."

    Sony PS 3: Sony eyes massive PS3 price cut as EA preps Madden NFL 10

    Sony Playstation 3 San Francisco (CA) - Sony is reportedly eyeing a $100 price cut for its high-end Playstation 3. According to Industy Gamers, the price cut could be timed to coincide with EA's (Electronic Arts) release of Madden NFL 10 in August.

    "Industry sources indicate Sony is planning a $100 price cut on the PS3 in mid-August, just prior the launch of Madden (8/18) and the start of the back to school shopping season. This will naturally be a positive for the industry," wrote Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia in an industry note.

    Bhatia also stated that the video game market was "alive and well."

    It's that time of year again -- the Electronic Entertainment Expo or E3 --though it's an event that was somewhat in doubt after E3 2008 proved underwhelming for many in the video game industry.

    I wrote about last year's experience, and back then I wondered if E3 would ever be the same or even return again. The recurring concern for any industry trade show is how an annual gathering benefits the participating companies and attendees. Over the years, E3 was becoming so big and so filled with parties and, frankly, so overwhelming that it was difficult for some people within the respective businesses and organizing body, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), to see the value. Not to mention that key players like ActiVision started pulling out in 2008 and created a bit of a domino effect.

    Sony Video: OLED To Replace Plasma and LCD TV Before 2012?

    Sony Oled A brand new technology, OLED, could replace both Plasma and LCD technologies in our lounge at a faster rate than the two dislodged the venerable Cathode Ray Tube (CRT).

    The price of Organic Light Emitting Diode technology is expected to fall down over the next few years reaching a more mainstream audience just before the Olympic Games in London in 2012.

    Until then, the only screen currently available boosting this technology is Sony's super slim Bravia XEL-1 which costs a staggering £3489 with a 3mm thickness.

    It comes with a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 and is built using eco-friendly bio plastic material. Still you could save a lot by flying to the US and purchase one over there where it is sold for around $2499.

    Sony Phone: Rumor mill says Sony Ericsson Idou might be coming this October

    Sony Ericsson [boygeniusreport] We’re sure you hate it every time tech bloggers say “take this with a grain of salt,” but you’re just going to have to take this with a grain of salt. According to the folks over a mobile.se, a German PR rep for Sony Ericsson has gone on the record to state that the Idou — a Symbian-powered device with a 3.5″ touchscreen, monstrous 12 megapixel camera and GPS — is slated to commence retail sales in October with November being the fall-back date.

    Sony PS 3: Nielsen report reveals average game console usage

    Sony Playstation 3 The Nielsen group has released a new report on usage of the three major consoles. Coming as little surprise, Nielsen's study has placed Wii in dead last, with the average player using the console 6.8 percent of the time during Nielsen's study in December, 2008. During that same period, those involved in the study played Xbox 360 10.2 percent and PS3 10.6 percent -- nearly double the Wii average. Clearly, the average gamer doesn't have the endurance necessary for long-term waggling.

    Wii also ranked the lowest in average days used over the course of the study, with users only partaking an average of 5 days (so much for that Wii Fit vow). The PS3 ranked second place, with users spending an average of 6.8 days days, which leaves us with Xbox 360 -- the top dog in this category -- with an average of 7.1 days.

    Lastly, Nielsen tracked the daily average number of sessions, and, again, Wii was last with 1.78 sessions, whereas the Xbox 360 and PS3 had much higher averages of 2.15 and 2.74 sessions, respectively. So, how would you rank your console usage?
